It carries the highest projectile protection of any craftable head armour, so it cuts the damage a rifle round does to the head. How much still reaches you depends on the weapon, the ammunition and the range — no armour in Rust makes you immune.
A spare is useful because armour degrades as it takes damage, so a second mask in the box gives you a replacement ready for the next fight.
